prestigious building in 1883. Today, it is the only Alfred Giles Courthouse still being used for its original function. Colonel Sidney Mead, who lived in Casa Blanca, former home of Erasmo Séguin, won the contract to build the structure. A corner stone bearing the names of architect and builder was laid February 22, 1884, and may be seen in front of the building. The structure is built of red brick, which probably came from this area. The bricks are covered with stucco and painted a cream color. A statute of “Lady Justice” with the scales of justice in her hands enjoys a prominent position on top of the building. A cupola is visible and the gabled roof is enhanced with cornices. According to the HANDBOOK OF TEXAS, the building has features of the Italianate mode. Offices are on the first floor and the basement. Two identical staircases in the entry way lead to courtrooms on the second. A long corridor divides the first floor and openings are located on each side of the public square. The Courthouse furnishes space for the judicial system, records, public business, and the County Commissioner’s court. The present county judge, Marvin Quinney presides here. A grant has been obtained to continue the upkeep of the courthouse and the grounds. |
